!!! IMPORTANT!
Before installing Grammarian, you must restart your computer with extensions off. To turn off all extensions, restart your computer while holding down the shift key until the “Welcome to Macintosh, Extensions Off” message appears.
Special Note to Virus Protection Software Users:
Immediately after you have installed Grammarian, your computer will need to be restarted. During this restart, the Grammarian control panel must make modifications to itself to assure compatibility with your system. Virus protection software you have already installed on your system may view this activity as suspicious. You may either disable the virus protection software or see below for instructions for specific software.
To disable virus protection software: Check for a key combination in the program’s control panel or consult the manual, to learn how to disable your software. Alternatively, you may use a program such as Conflict Catcher™ or Apple’s Extensions Manager to disable your virus protection software's extension and/or control panel. After the initial restart and personalization of Grammarian, you can safely reenable your virus protection software. Note: Booting with the extensions off will not allow Grammarian to configure itself, as both virus protection and Grammarian will be disabled.
If You Are Using Symantec Antivirus for the Macintosh: The first time the Grammarian control panel loads, Symantec Antivirus will prompt you twice whether you want to “Allow, Deny, or Remember” Grammarian's attempted modifications. Select “Allow” both times. You should not experience any further difficulties.
If You Are Using Gatekeeper: Prior to installing Grammarian, open the Gatekeeper control panel. Click on “Privileges,” then click on “New.” Enter “Grammarian” in the text box, and then click on the “Res: Self” checkbox. This will tell Gatekeeper to allow Grammarian to modify its own resources. You may now install Grammarian without experiencing further difficulties.
If You Are Using Virex, McAfee VirusScan, or Disinfectant: You should not experience any problems installing Grammarian with Virex, McAfee VirusScan, or Disinfectant installed.
If You Are Using Any Other Virus Protection Software: We recommend you disable any other virus protection software for the first time you reboot your computer after the Grammarian installation to avoid any difficulties which may be encountered.
Grammarian comes preconfigured to work with many of the most popular software applications on the market today. If the Grammarian icon does not appear in the Finder Bar with your favorite application, you can add it to Grammarian's active application list by using the Add button in the Control Panel.
With Interactive Checking enabled, Grammarian will sound an audible alert as grammatical errors occur in your writing. If you have also enabled Auto-Show Suggestions, the Grammar Check window will appear when there are errors, with suggestions for correcting the error.
Grammarian can also perform batch checks of entire documents or selected text.
Using Grammarian with Spell Catcher:
Grammarian can work seamlessly with Casady & Greene's spell checking program, Spell Catcher. However, you must have Spell Catcher version 1.5.9 or later in order for Grammarian to recognize and utilize Spell Catcher's spell checking ability while using Check All Grammar. If you have Spell Catcher 1.5.6, 1.5.7, or 1.5.8 please download the update from our Web Site: www.casadyg.com, or contact us to have a disk shipped to you.
Contradictory rules:
Some rules contradict each other, such as Expand Abbreviation and Replace With Abbreviation. Be sure not to enable conflicting rules.
Editing functions:
Grammarian cannot track movement of the cursor with the arrow keys or the mouse clicks in some programs. If you have jumped around within a document, Grammarian may improperly perceive a sentence. The best way to avoid this is to do a check with "Check All Grammar..." or "Check Selection Only..." from Grammarian's Menu after an extensive editing session.
Using Grammarian with Outlook Express:
Because of the way text is handled by Microsoft Outlook Express, text replacements are slow.
